A Focus on Ken Ueno
Although at first glance this unique composer may not seem to belong on a blog dedicated to the wind band, but actually, Ken Ueno is exactly the kind of composer that the University of Maryland Wind Orchestra is interested in, and it is very possible that one might see his music on one of our programs in the future. His past experiences and interests, which have led him to becoming a contemporary composer and throat-singer are quite inspiring, and his works are certainly challenging to our current perspectives on what new "classical" compositions should sound like.
Here is a link to his recent article in the New York Times, titled "Finding The Score Within". Also, here is a link to his website, where you can learn more about his music, and listen to more clips of his works.
