David Amram was approached by Walter Hinrichsen of C.F Peters Publications about writing a work for the American Wind Symphony Orchestra, directed by Robert Boudreau. After many years, in 1965, he wrote King Lear Variations for the AWSO. Mr. Boudreau was so pleased with the piece that he commissioned a horn concerto. The concerto was completed in May of 1967, and was premiered on July 16 of that year at the Pittsburgh river home of the AWSO. John Lounsberry performed as solo hornist. Mr. Amram dedicated the concerto to his agent and mentor, Ms. Barne Ostertag.
